Christmas is just around the corner, which is a busy time for children both at school and home. There are lots of activities, celebratory events and unexpected liaisons, which can be both exciting and overwhelming. This is where mindfulness can bring a sense of peace into people’s lives.
Mindfulness can empower children to focus, connect to their breathing and pay attention to the here and now. With consistent practice, mindfulness provides children with the tools improve their attention and listening skills and helps to reduce stress, depression and anxiety. With a mindful outlook, children begin to make more informed choices, connect with their emotions and develop self-regulation tools to enhance their wellbeing.
On my hunt for some lovely mindfulness resources for this time of year, I came across a scripted Christmas Mindfulness Meditation Activity from Twinkl Life. This meditation is a great way to get children to relax, slow down and focus on their breathing. To help the kids in my life calm down during such a busy time, I recorded the meditation (audio below), but added a ‘star like’ twist to get into the festive spirit. The response from the children has been amazing – it’s great to see the difference in them and how they have begun to focus more on their breathing.
So now it’s time for you to relax, sit back and have a listen to the meditation, by clicking on this link below. Be sure to set up the space beforehand with a Christmassy feel – perhaps by looking at some stars or an image of a Christmas tree. Enjoy!
Remember, everything starts with the breath. It keeps us alive by bringing oxygenated energy into the body. When we focus on the breath regularly, it can be incredibly calming for the mind, body and spirit. This meditation is ideal for older kids in upper primary, secondary and even adults. For younger kids, feel free to listen to the first few minutes, then pause when you feel they’ve had enough.
I hope this helps you and the children in your life connect with your breathing so you can focus on the present moment and cope with life’s ups and downs, during the festive season and beyond.
